Description:

Manage the workload of the Applied Composites Section, supervise the staff, and provide hands-on technical contribution in support of the Laboratory's composites and polymer molding needs.
- Provide the technical leadership and vision required to keep the section's expertise and technical capabilities aligned with the evolving technical needs of core APL programs and current with advances in the external environment. Develop business for the section by working with business area program and technical leads to secure sponsor funding.
- Manage service delivery in response to direct tasking requirements by setting work priorities, assigning appropriate staffing and technical resources, tracking work status, and maintaining communication between staff, management, and customers. Ensure that customer schedule, technical, budget, and quality requirements are met.
- Conduct hands-on technical work in support of APL programs and technical development initiatives. Analyze and interpret research results and prepare reports and memos documenting technical findings. Stay current on the state of the art in relevant technologies.
- Develop and maintain material processing, component fabrication, and product validation capabilities in support of advanced composite component development requirements for programs. Develop new processing, instrumentation, and facilities as needed.
- Manage and develop staff to support the section's roles, including conducting performance reviews, hiring new staff, and encouraging continuing education and training for professional development. Prepare reports and presentations on activities, plans, and accomplishments.

Qualifications:

Required:
BS or MS in mechanical/materials engineering or equivalent, knowledge of solid mechanics, understanding of composite design, fabrication, and processing. Minimum of 5 years leading technical efforts in composites/polymers, including technical oversight/review of composite and polymer fabrication processes. Experience characterizing materials and using engineering software applications in the documentation, communication, and solution of engineering problems. Interest in hands-on experimental work, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to multitask.

Desired:
PhD in mechanical/materials engineering or equivalent, significant experience with advanced composites fabrication and processing methods. Experience in defining required and appropriate materials and thermo-physical materials property testing for customer applications. Experience developing tooling to support component fabrication, and expertise in operating and controlling computerized data acquisition systems and instrument controllers.
