Principal Design Engineer-Devices
This role is the “senior” design engineer responsible for ensuring the integrity of robust device designs, through providing mechanical/electrical design expertise for all Delivery Device Research and Development (DDR&D), which includes the support of device projects in both the early-stage Advanced Development area, as well as subsequent, full-scale development that occurs in the Commercialization area. This individual will interface with all DDR&D project engineers and project teams, design partners and engineering firms involved in the design of Lilly devices.
KEY OBJECTIVES/DELIVERABLES:
  • Provide technical expertise and ensuring robustness of device designs.
  • Intellectual Property Support: Support LRL Legal by providing detailed technical expertise for ongoing support for Lilly device intellectual property( started under Advanced Development ).
  • Technical Merit: Ensure that device design concepts are based on sound design principles.
  • Technical Rigor: Ensure that device design resources utilize appropriate tools on their projects.
  • Design and Moldability expertise: Ensure that the designs deployed are appropriate in their readiness for injection molding, metal stamping, die casting( other manufacturing processes ); manual and/or high speed assembly.
  • Management Updates: As required, the individual is responsible to provide design related opinions to support the integrity of device projects for internal Senior Management for DDR&D projects.
  • Coordinate Device Risk Assessment and Design Control Deliverables.
  • Ensuring a thorough technical, project and business risk assessment is conducted and updated.
  • Ensuring appropriate formal approval of required risk assessment documentation is accomplished.
  • Ensuring all required design control deliverables are completed( including ensuring the completion of required Phase documentation and Phase closure ) and to facilitate timely product launches.
  • Provide Design Expertise “Mentoring” to other engineers across other devices and provide expertise to others in Delivery Device Research and Development in design expertise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelors and Advanced Degree Required (MS or PhD), Engineering or Technical related.
  • Previous design and design coordination experience is required.
  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years experience in the design and development of complex, integrated systems. This experience must have been in a regulated environment. This could be in: medical devices (preferred), consumer products (e.g., cell phones), automotive or defense or aerospace.
  • This experience must be in the design of complex, integrated systems, which should include mechanical, electromechanical, electronic with integrated software and/or fluid handling systems and have supported these devices through manufacturing, of which five (5) or more years of that experience should have been in product development.
  • Must be familiar with planning global launch forecasts and scheduling, to facilitate long-term product planning.
  • The role requires strategic thinking to help assess the balance between technical risk, business impact, financial analysis(development costs and revenue projections) and customer preferences.
  • Deep Engineering/Technical Skills: Basic engineering analysis, including design, stress, tolerance and finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Engineering design and analytical tools, including but limited to: Failure Modes and Effects Analysis(FMEA) and Design of Experiments(DOE).
  • The integration of design and manufacturing processes: specifically: Design for Manufacturability(DFM), Design for Assembly(DFA), Mold Flow Analysis and Design for Reliability(DFR).
  • Analytical tools used in design, including but not limited to Quality Function Deployment(QFD).
ADDITIONAL SKILLS/PREFERENCES:
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Broad technical expertise( background in biomedical, mechanical, electrical, and/or plastics molding ).
  • Familiarity with injection molding process; tooling design, gating, runners, etc.
  • Ability to compare and contrast various design options and technology application options.
  • Experience with circuit board design, assembly and inspection.
  • Familiarity with processes used in the creation and documentation of intellectual property(invention disclosure memos, patent applications and drawings).
  • Experience in product development including early stage product selection, an understanding of customer needs, and knowledge of industry trends, through maintaining contacts in device community.
  • Exposure and general familiarity with validation and scale up issues.
  • Ability to identify program risks, evaluate contingency plans, and implement plans to minimize risk.
