| Description |
The
Head Nurse Anesthetist will be in charge of the Certified Registered
Nurse Anesthetists and Anesthesia Technicians under the direction of
the Chairman of the Department. Shall provide Anesthesia as an integral
member of the anesthesia care team. Assists in the running of the
department. Shall function as a member of the Anesthesia Care Team
practicing independently, interdependently or dependently according to
his/her expertise. The Duties shall include, but not be limited to:
pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patient; selection of anesthetic
agents and techniques; selection of monitoring devices; placement of
intravenous, arterial and central lines; induction and maintenance of
anesthesia; performance of supportive life functions; recognition of
abnormal patient response; identifying and managing emergency
situations; initiating and modifying drug and pain therapy;
participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation; conclude anesthesia;
give appropriate reports in recovery room; post-anesthetic follow-up
and evaluation of patients; keeps aware of current techniques,
equipment and theory; performs additional acts which the collaborating
physician and CRNA agree are within the scope of practice.

| Requirements |
In order to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) one must obtain the following:
(1)
Graduate from an approved school of nursing and hold current
registration by State Licensing Authorities as a Registered Nurse.
(2)
Graduate from an approved program of anesthesia, accredited by the
Council of Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational
Programs/Schools or its predecessor.
(3) Evidence individual
competency by passing a qualifying examination that concurs eligibility
for certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists
or its predecessor.
(4) Be certified every two years by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.

Hold current authorization from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to
practice in the expanded role under Massachusetts Regulations of the
Board of Nursing (244 CMR 4.00). |
