Group Fitness Instructors - PRN/Part Time Positions Available



POSITION SUMMARY: This position will work closely with residents to improve the quality of life through fitness and nutrition. Candidates must be able to develop and implement individual and group physical fitness programs, conduct personal fitness assessments, teach a variety of exercise classes, and provide assistance on weight machines and cardio equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED: The ideal candidate must grasp the basic principles of exercise physiology, know the importance of physical fitness for health and overall functioning, and be able to identify the proper body mechanics during exercise. A working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, proper nutrition, and the ability to conduct basic health screenings is required. Must be physically fit, be capable of offering assistance in correct exercise form and equipment usage, and be familiar with the principles of exercise for older adults.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work with limited supervision. Be a self-starter while working harmoniously with other departments. Demonstrate leadership skills and have the ability to speak in front of a group. An energetic personality is favored, and must also love working with the elderly. May assist in the development of an exercise class schedule and address individual fitness needs and goals. Basic knowledge of computers is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Desired: : Bachelor’s degree, Required: CPR certification, certification in group fitness or personal training, preferably specializing in senior physical fitness, and experience in working with the elderly.

EQUIPMENT AND COMPUTER OPERATIONS: Must know how to properly operate exercise equipment. If hired to teach aqua classes, should know how to swim, conduct basic health screenings. Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED/PREFERRED: Must be Be Certified as a Personal Trainer or Group Exercise Leader from a nationally recognized organization. Senior Fitness Instructor Certification recommended. CPR certification. Other certifications that would be helpful: Pilates/Yoga Instructor, Water Fitness Instructor. Ongoing education is encouraged.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide fitness and nutrition assessments for residents and help to meet their personal health and fitness needs/goals.
  2. Teach a variety of exercise classes (with classes being offered evenly at both AFV I&II) possibly including water aerobics, strength training, cardio and flexibility type classes
  3. Train residents on proper use of the exercise equipment and offer assistance when needed.
  4. Recognize and report any health concerns or physical injuries
  5. Work with physical therapist in referring residents for treatment and provide continuing therapy exercises.
  6. Organize friendly competitions, such as the Senior Olympics, etc.
  7. Write articles for the weekly newsletter.

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Work is generally performed indoors in a climate controlled Gym and heated pool. Occasional lifting and transfers of light loads of less than 30 pounds required. Top physical condition is a must in order to perform exercises while teaching various group classes. If teaching aqua, Must be a good swimmer and able to assist person’s in and out of the pool. Bending, squatting and reaching is necessary, as well as good endurance to handle several cardio exercise classes per day. Traveling between the AFV I and II is an essential part of this job. Mild cleaning of gym equipment and area is required.

WORK LOCATION: Travel between Air Force Village I & II is an essential part of this job.

ATTIRE/DRESS CODE: Conservative fitness attire is appropriate. One piece swim suit while in pool area. See employee handbook for specific guidelines. It is the intention of AFV to ensure that employees posses professional and neat appearance at all times while on duty.

RANGE OF PAY: Available in Human Resources.
