Provides professional nursing care (defined by the Nurse Practice Act for the State of Texas ) within an assigned unit; coordinates care planning with other disciplines.
1. Utilizes the nursing process to provide individualized, goal directed nursing care.
2. Institutes appropriate nursing interventions which might be required to stabilize a patient's condition and/or prevent complications.
3. Knows rationale for the effects and proper administration of the medications and/or treatments she/he administers.
4. Consults with the appropriate licensed practitioner to clarify any order or treatment regimen that the nurse has reason to believe is inaccurate and/or contraindicated.
5. Reports and documents the patient's symptoms, responses, progress, medications, and/or treatments.
6. Promotes and participates in patient education and counseling based on health needs.
7. Collaborates with members of health disciplines in the interest of the patent's health care.
8. Documents completely and in an organized and timely manner.
9. Verifies, dates, times, and signs off medical orders.
10. Charts all medications given on PACU nurse's notes, documenting response, if appropriate.
11. Performs all required skills competently. Functions independently with complex treatments, procedures, and equipment required by unit's patient population.
12. Complies with policies regarding narcotics/controlled substances.
13. Utilizes supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
14. Troubleshoots equipment independently.
15. Seeks guidance when using unfamiliar equipment.
16. Gives a comprehensive shift report. Gives report on patients when leaving an assignment.
17. Presents a positive unit and nursing image when communicating with other departments, nursing units, physicians, patients/families.
18. Acts as a patient advocate in accordance with the ANA Code of nursing.
19. Participates in the problem solving process.
20. Provides care in an organized and time-efficient manner.
21. Complies with attendance standards.
22. Contributes to formulation and attainment of unit goals.
23. Participates in quality improvement and monitoring activities.
24. Recognizes and suggests cost-effective and cost-saving measures.
25. Suggest1plans/presents education programs for the unit.
26. Attends staff meeting or obtains information presented.
27. Expected to help in Surgery and ICU if needed.
28. Extubation and assists in reintubation of patients.
29. Recover Surgery, ERCP, Litho, GI Lab (if heavily sedated).
30. Back up call for OR and large cases after hours.
31. Go to ICU to recover patients, if needed and if staffing permits.
32. Must be able to function independently when on call.
33. EKG interpretation.
34. Be able to work in pre-op holding area.
35. Utilizes appropriate customer scripting as evidenced by observation and improved patient satisfaction
