Manager, Technology - DBA

This role will manage a team that designs, implements and maintains the database environments for the Technology organization. Additionally, this role supports hosting initiatives, which includes research and development, clustering technologies, database performance and tuning, monitoring and 24x7 support. You will ensure that the database technologies used effectively support Thomson Reuters ongoing business operations, revenue, and strategic direction.
AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Technology Management (30%)
- Work with business unit development teams to define database needs with consideration to issues like budget, deployment schedules and resource availability. Ensure resources are implemented as required by the business units.
- Work with business units, Architects, and Security teams to ensure database adherence to security and architectural standards and directions.
- Forecast, plan, research, and select new technologies that provide the database groups with the necessary infrastructure to meet its technology and business goals. Proactively align technology goals with business/strategic goals.
- Provide leadership to ensure effective implementation and support for all database applications and manage database related projects.
- Ensure all supported applications maintain database performance and reliability that meet SLAs. This includes providing strategy and vision for infrastructure technology and the processes necessary to meet business objectives.
- Provide cost center management for capital expenditures and associated database expenses. Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, make sourcing decisions, and assume technology cost control.
- Establish and maintain relationships with business units and ensure services and solutions are effectively meeting their needs.
- Communicate and escalate operational, technical, and resource issues with management teams as needed. Provide routine updates to management on business unit initiatives.
- Follow-up on database related operational issues that arise; fine-tune expectations to address gaps or make changes as appropriate.
- Participate in strategic planning process. Collaborate in defining team level goals based on customer needs, strategy and Line of Sight (LOS) requirements.
- Provide first level approval for database expenditures
- Monitor and react to changing environmental factors (ex. new customers, new technologies, changing customer needs, changing resource allocations). Share this knowledge with and provide guidance and support for the employees impacted by the changes.
- Collaborate with other Thomson Reuters companies on processes, best practices, and technology solutions
- Manage up to 28 people, including team leads. Employees are located globally, so this position will involve some travel.
- Responsibility for coordinating the Database Architecture capital and expense budgets in conjunction with the business units.
- B.S./B.A. Computer Science or related field; or equivalent level of experience
- 8-10+ years progressive technology experience including at least 3 years experience leading teams
- 6+ years progressive experience in database technologies
- Proven skills in developing and leading high performing teams that demonstrates excellence in a dynamic fast-paced environment with a high degree of flexibility and accountability
- Experience in implementing and supporting databases
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills including both oral and written proficiency. Must be able to present effectively to and facilitate meetings with a wide variety of audiences including senior management, business units, development teams and technology partners.
- Proven project management skills with a special focus on allocating resources
- Strong technical aptitude - database platforms, operating systems, network, etc.
- Experience in technical support management
