Position Summary

The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to ante-partum, intra-partum, postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM's scope of practice includes providing care for newborn infants, adolescents, and women throughout the lifespan. Care is based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served. The CNM practice includes primary as well as specialized care provided in multiple locations throughout the facility and in outpatient clinics. The CNM promotes safety and quality in clinical care, contributes to research and teaching, and provides leadership in the organization.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited to:

· Supports and empowers women throughout their childbirth experience enabling them to make informed choices about their care. While having the appropriate skills and knowledge to understand, interpret and manage complex physiological, psychological, and social changes a woman and her baby may experience.
· Establish and maintain communication with individuals and groups about difficult or complex matters overcoming any problems/barriers in communication.
· Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document such collaboration in the medical record and appropriate narrative summaries.
· Utilizes prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Texas Board of Nursing, Texas department of Public Safety and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
· Initiates necessary emergency interventions to stabilize the patient when needed.
· Maintains high quality documentation/record keeping at all times.
· Assists in providing education for nursing staff, the interdisciplinary healthcare team and community.
· Utilizes current research and evidence-based-decision-making in all clinical practice.
· Incorporates Clinical Research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.
· Participates in quality/performance improvement activities.
· Serves as an expert consultant to healthcare team members and the larger community.
· Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
· Role models advanced professional nursing through conduct, appearance, mutual respect, communication, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
· Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
· Enhances the body of knowledge of nursing or area of specialization through exchange of ideas and knowledge in professional organizations, oral presentations, posters, research activities and written publications.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: BLS, NRP, and preferred ACLS; RN licensure in the state of Texas, Recognition as an Advanced Practice Nurse Midwife in the State of Texas, Certification as a Nurse Midwife by the American College of Nurse Midwives ACNM or the American Midwifery Certification Board AMCB. Must demonstrate and maintain credentialing and licensing requirements with Spring Branch Medical Center and the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.

Education/Experience: Master's Degree in Nursing preferred and three to five years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Degree of supervision required: Functions independently, but in collaboration with the midwife medical director, staff physicians, and interdisciplinary healthcare team, to provide midwifery services to patients. Self directed, responsible and accountable for clinical practice. Provides continuity, compassionate, culturally sensitive care to patients, and models this for and colleagues. CNM interests and responsibilities extend to the community level where they strive to improve maternal/child health from a patient-centered/family-centered approach.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of professional nursing theory, clinical practice standards, normal maternal/fetal growth and development and requirements of nurse-midwifery practice. Interdependently seeks out resources and solve complex problems. Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others. Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments & interventions, prepare reports and presentations. Proficient computer skills, and the ability to learn new software programs. Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals, provide staff education and in-services as needed. Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift as least fifty pounds. Able to remain focused and well organized.
