Position Summary

In this position, the Coding Resource Coordinator will initiate and participate in activities including, but not limited to, physician office coding audits, coordination and execution of physicians, midlevel providers and office coders education related to ICD and CPT coding, orientation of new coders, quality improvement projects and organizational communication related to coding throughout the MPD (Medical Practices Division) sites. This position will routinely travel throughout the MPD sites of Montana and Wyoming and work collaboratively with coders, managers, physicians, midlevel providers and staff to ensure a consistently compliant state related to coding activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordination of Coding Education

  • Provides orientation to new coders hired to work in MPD sites assuring that they have all the necessary tools and skills to be successful and productive in their role. Routinely updates coders related to changes in coding requirements as indicated by regulatory agencies.
  • Develops and maintains a physician coding education program. Provides face to face orientation related to coding expectations and requirements to new physicians and midlevel providers in MPD sites. At least annually meets with each physician, midlevel provider or group to provide updated and useful site specific coding education.
  • Provides appropriate education to managers and other applicable support staff within MPD related to coding and compliance activities on a routine basis. Assists managers to provide site specific information as requested.
  • Keeps MPD Leadership apprised of changes in standards and recommends strategies to comply with standards.
  • Gathers data related to education, compiles and reports data in useful, consistent manner. Presents data to appropriate groups within the organization as directed by supervisor.

Audits/Internal Reviews

  • Develops processes for and coordinates routine internal reviews within the MPD related to coding and compliance activities as directed by MPD leadership.
  • Gathers data and tracks trends related to internal reviews or audits. Creates reports and communicates data to appropriate groups within the organization as directed by supervisor.
  • Coordinates external audits initiated by SVH or SCL .
  • Develops and coordinates action plans and associated tasks related to audit and internal review findings in a timely fashion as defined by the action plan.

Staff and Provider Relations & Communication

  • Develops/maintains positive working relationships with staff & providers in MPD and SVH. Collaborates with clinic managers on appropriate issues related to coding and compliance. Meets with managers on a regular basis.
  • Serves as an exemplary role model and projects a positive image of SVH, MPD and each clinic at all times.
  • Communicates potential risk issues to MPD leadership, clinic managers, lead physicians in a timely manner and demonstrates appropriate judgment regarding sensitive issues and confidential information.
  • Develops printed materials that meet SVH standards.

Education, Experience and Licensure/Certification Requirements: Requirements are

Education, Experience and Licensure/Certification Requirements: Requirements are representative of the minimum level of knowledge, skills and/or abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position

  1. Certified coder Current certification as CPC (Certified Procedural Coder) or CCS-P (certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based)
  2. 5 years experience of ambulatory care coding experience
  3. Valid MT or WY Driver’s License, proof of insurability and a clean driving record
  4. Current working knowledge of ICD, CPT , HCPCS coding and other coding related regulatory standards/requirements
  5. Demonstrated ability to facilitate change and knowledge of adult learning principles
  6. Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-functional team
  7. Strong organizational skills, customer service skills and attention to detail
  8. Ability to successfully function in a fast paced, service oriented environment
  9. Experience in understanding and usage of computers, including Excel, Access and other data base applications, as well as the ability to learn new applications relevant to the position
