Interpreters for the Deaf


Needed Immediately…

…to fill fully benefited positions for the upcoming school year. 6.25 hours/day, 10-months per year (school year). $16.83 - $20.65/hr. Benefits include: sick and vacation time, 14 paid holidays, and generous insurance packages including medical, dental, vision and life insurances, with at least one medical plan covered 100% by District. Retirement – employees are enrolled in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree in a sign language interpreter training program, deaf studies or a related area. Requires one year of experience providing sign-to-English (expressive skills) and English-to-sign (receptive skills) interpreting in one or more sign systems/languages. Additional related experience in an academic or similar environment may be substituted for some higher education based on two years of experience for one year of college. Successful completion of the district’s competency exam demonstrating knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing and mathematics (or readiness in those subject areas).
  • Certified by the national RID, or have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA, the ESSE-I, or the NAD/ACCI assessment.
  • Valid first aid certification.

Paper application packets may be obtained from and returned to the Classified Personnel Department at 875 E. Cochran Street in Simi Valley, Monday - Friday between 8:00am - 4:30pm. If the applicant plans to apply for a position after 4:30pm on the closing date established, the applicant must apply online. However, proof of original documentation required for specific positions can only be submitted during regular business hours, and must be submitted by 4:30pm on the closing date for the specific recruitment. GENERAL INFORMATION

SELECTION PROCESS

Application: Applications will be screened for evidence of the minimum requirements for the position; candidates must meet minimum qualifications as stated in the job description. Applications must be sufficiently complete and specific to fully indicate the experience and other qualifications of applicants. Falsification or omission of material fact is cause for rejection, removal from the eligibility list, or dismissal from employment. Applications must be submitted by 4:00pm on the filing deadline, when applicable. Faxes and postmarks are not accepted.

Examination: All applicants are required to pass a qualifications/technical appraisal/oral exam. All applicants must achieve a passing score in the examination process in order to be placed on the eligibility list. Any person who, as an individual or in cooperation with another person, attempts to defeat, deceive, or obstruct the competitive nature of an examination is subject to severe penalties under Education Code Section 45317 and the rules of the Personnel Commission.

Eligibility List: Dual certification examinations are open to competition by qualified employees and non-employees alike. Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination will have their names placed on a dually certified eligibility list. Rank on the list is determined by the scores attained on the various portions of the examination. Eligible veterans receive preference points on open, entry level examinations, only. Permanent employees of the District receive seniority points on promotional and dual certification examinations. Points are added to the final score.

Appointment: Certification from the eligibility list must be made from the top three ranks of those who are “ready, willing, and able” to report to work. Names remain on the eligibility list until applicants are hired, decline three job interviews, notify the Personnel Commission that they are unavailable, or until the list expires.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

· Salary: Five step salary range that provides annual increases of approximately five percent until the fifth step is reached. Initial step placement (normally up to Step 3) based on qualifying education and experience as outlined in Merit System Rule 7.20.1.

· Vacation is earned based on assigned hours. Increased vacation allowance based on months of service with the district. Confidential employees receive an additional 3 days vacation allotment, up to a maximum of 21 days. Management employees receive 22 days of vacation, (based on 12-month assignment).

· Sick leave is earned at the rate of one day (based on the number of assigned hours) per month, and is accumulative from year to year.

· Holidays: 15 holidays per year, (based on 12-month assignment).

· Insurance and Credit Union: The District offers a competitive Health and Welfare plan for employees and dependents, based upon the number of hours worked; employees who are placed in a regular assignment of 20 hours or more per week are eligible for benefits. The Ventura Schools Federal Credit Union offers a variety of services.

· Retirement: Employees are enrolled in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), Social Security, and Medicare. New employees who work less than four hours per day are enrolled in Social Security and Medicare.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (Upon Offer of Employment)

Employment Verification: The Immigration Reform and Control Act requires that the District obtain documentation from every individual who is employed which verifies identity and authorizes his/her right to work in the United States.

Individuals selected for employment must have an intradermal tuberculin examination within 10 days of employment to determine freedom from tuberculosis. The District reserves the right to require a job related physical examination and satisfactory results from such an exam.

Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information, and from employing a person who has been convicted of a violent or serious felony, as defined.

All candidates with a conviction record for offenses other than minor traffic violations, must file a conviction record statement with their application. Such a conviction, or failure to report a record of convictions, may bar you from employment.
