Software Engineer (DTS)

Sugar Land, TX |
| |
Software Engineer in the Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) Group. Responsibilities include design, development and maintenance of Dispatcher Training Simulator component of the Network Manager EMS (Previously Ranger EMS). Responsibility includes the task of ensuring that all the functions that operate under normal system operation (such as Automatic Generation Control, State Estimation, Outage Scheduling, Market Systems) behave identically under simulated conditions. Responsibilities also include customizing the system according to customer requirements and interacting with end users for initiating change orders, conducting training sessions, conducting acceptance tests and resolving reported problems. The major projects I worked on:
| · | UI Migration: Was involved in migrating the system from a Unix based user interface to a Windows based user interface. Was also involved in making the DTS System user friendly by exploiting the complete feature set available with the new UI.
| · | Customization of DTS for NYISO: Was involved in customizing the DTS for NYISO and adding additional extensive functionality unique to their requirements. Worked on interfacing DTS with real-time applications such as Market Operations and AGC so that the simulator behaves in an automatic manner with limited instructor intervention. Was also involved in setting up a QA system involving four Energy Management Systems. The systems were driven by a DTS system in real-time with data flowing both ways via ICCP. The QA System is routinely used for performance tests and market trials.
| · | Customization of DTS for ComEd: Was involved in customizing the system for ComEd and conducting the acceptance tests.

Principal Investigator on Research and development contracts from the DoD SBIR division. Responsibilities included development of prototype applications, authoring formal proposals, preparing project reports and presentations. Also managed Internet services and group communication features for the company.
| · | Seamless Supply System: Design and development of an online purchasing system (dubbed the Seamless Supply System) that interfaced with varied sources of purchasing and placed orders with the various purchasing systems based on programmable business rules. These external systems were available for interfacing either via the CORBA protocol, or via the Internet. The system had a non-intrusive operation so that the user could enter the orders and disconnect from the system. The system was built atop J2EE technologies. I was the Principal Investigator for this project.
| · | Game theory based vulnerability analysis: Development of a prototype system for analysis of security vulnerabilities based on a game theory approach matching adversary strategies against the defense strategies.
| · | Tech Support Knowledge Base: Implementation of a technical support knowledge base with features such as priority based knowledge sharing and expert person's bias. The system was implemented in J2EE (Servlets and JSP) and communicated with the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Job responsibilities included Research and development on research contracts from various government and non-government agencies, and also system administration of the department's Linux and Windows workstations and servers.
| · | Intelligent Agents for Real-Time Power Scheduling: This was a research project for the EPRI for a market based multi agent system to simulate the scheduling of power transactions in a deregulated environment. This research also contributed towards my Ph.D. thesis.
| · | Mini OASIS for simulation of deregulated environment: Built a CGI based OASIS (online power transaction system) that students could use to simulate a deregulated power market.
| · | Group Bookmarking System: Built a group bookmarking system for the research group so that the researchers could share their bookmarks with each other using a bookmark server. It was Java client-server architecture with RMI as the communication channel.

Thesis: Intelligent Agents for Real-Time Power Scheduling
The thesis discussed a multi-agent based technique for contingency planning in a deregulated environment. Contingency planning is a multi-criteria optimization problem. The thesis dealt with providing a decision aid to the system operator for determining the transactions to be accepted to keep the system contingency safe. The thesis discussed providing the operator information on the tradeoff involved in the various options. The software portion of the research was coded in Java and Fortran.
